Programs for ASSIST (Homeless Students)

Although the number fluctuates, there are often approximately 700 students in the ASSIST (Aid & Support for Students in Sudden Transition) Program at any given time. This number includes pre-k through graduating seniors in the St. Johns County School District, including the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind. These are our county’s homeless students.

The youth in the ASSIST program are fortunate to have support and guidance throughout the school year however, St. Johns CARES saw a gap during the summer months when school is not in session. Many of these children do not have the opportunity to go to summer camp or other activities during their free time. Since 2012, in order to help fill this gap, St. Johns CARES assembled “Summer FunPacks” filled with summer activities, including one brand new book. These were delivered to the schools for the kids in the School District's ASSIST Program. This program was re-tooled in 2017, but still impacts all of these children.
In 2018, each student will continue to receive one new book to keep young minds busy over the summer. Exciting additions to the initiative include "Suitcases for Seniors" and scholarships to the Marine Science Program (summer camp) at Gamble Rogers Middle School.
St. Johns CARES is raising funds for “Suitcases for Seniors” which will provide each of the 30 or so ASSIST graduating seniors who are college-bound with a brand new suitcase filled with dorm essentials. Please make your donation HERE . Donors can shop from the Amazon "wish list" for suitcase items such as sheets, towels or a desk lamp to be shipped directly to St. Johns CARES.
.
Additional funds will be raised to send as many of the middle- schoolers in the ASSIST Program as possible to the Marine Science Program. Fundraising is being done along with "Suitcases for Seniors" fundraising, and donations from local businesses and the community are welcome. The goal of providing educational activities over the summer will definitely be met in this camp!
ALL DONATIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE!
